The Beastlings- a must-see talented and versatile performance

I've not attended any new musicals and shows for a few years now and when producer, stage performer and emcee Joanne Kam, sent me a message about The Beastlings, the description of the music that was lined up for the weekend show immediately attracted me.

Q: What do you get if you combined The Beatles, The Four Seasons, Boys II Men, Backstreet Boys,The Warblers and One Direction into ONE Group?

A: An all singing, harmonising, fun combination of vocal magic performing Pop, Rock, R & B and Soul medleys from the 70s, 80s, 90s and current hits in fresh new arrangements!

I knew nothing about the singers but for RM60 and a welcome drink, it is not too big of a sum to pay to watch such great local talent.

Theatre Lounge Cafe, Plaza Damas 3, Sri Hartamas is a cozy little outlet where you can picture Cher performing with Christina Aguilera in Burlesque. You're seated close enough to the stage to feel that you're connected to the performers and Creative & Music Director, Llew Marsh, who played the piano and sang, made sure the boys interacted with the audience well.

The setting was so casual that it felt that we were all friends. The boys in their 20s and 30s, I'm assuming, were candid and charming in their own way.

The band consisted of Abi Manyu (he has Michael Jackson's voice), Afham Zainal (he is a little raw but with more practise can shine, sings with a bass tone), playful Izen Kong (his theatre like expressions and versality reminds me of Roomie) and Jee Yann (he is the rebellious rocker).

Together with Llew Marsh they delivered such an energetic 75- minute performance. They opened with a medley of Michael Jackson's "Love Never Felt So Good" and Bee Gees' "Emotion" and other covers included Maroon 5's "Sunday Morning", "Marry You" and "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars, Innuendo's "Belaian Jiwa", a medley of songs by Lady Gaga and the highlight for me was the 26 4-chord medley where you can see how they are able to switch from one song to another in a matter of seconds.

The show opened last night with guest stars Tony Yusuff and Michael Lin who sang "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" together among other songs. There will be a surprise guest star tonight and tomorrow night as well.
