KL Sky Tour Gives You a Birds Eye View of the City (and more!)

Helicopter tours around Kuala Lumpur city isn't something new but we all know that a ride of about 30 minutes can cost more than RM2000. This price alone will scare most locals from even thinking about flying around their city. Most of us won't even dream of ever getting on a helicopter ride in our lifetime.

Cempaka Helicopter Corporation now makes chartering a helicopter possible at a fraction of the price. You read right! You can now afford to have a helicopter tour (you just have cut back on some gourmet coffee for a few months instead of years to save some mullah!)

Cempaka Helicopter Corporation offers a wide range of services including tours, corporate and VIP transfers and private helicopter charters. They were established in 2004 and have a current Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Department of Civil Aviation, Malaysia (DCAM) for Public Transport.

KL Sky Tour, which operates at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa Helipad, is an initiative of Cempaka Helicopters in collaboration with Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Bureau (KLTB).

Due to its strategic location, the Titiwangsa Helipad (click to view map) offers a unique opportunity to provide international and domestic tourists a chance to see the incredible KL Skyline all within a 6 minute ride. You might wonder if 6 minutes is really enough and the answer is "Yes!". It is the cheapest package on offer at RM198+ per pax and it covers the landmarks of Kuala Lumpur city centre.

They also offer 15, 30 & 45 minute rides which allows you to fly a little further away. A 15 minute flight lets you fly over every iconic structure in Kuala Lumpur including the Batu Caves, King’s Palace & KL city centre. The 30 minute ride sees you flying over KL’s rainforests from above the tree tops and KL’s city centre from above the roof tops. The 45 minute ride (it's the most expensive at RM1388+ per pax) climbs 6,000 feet over the valleys and mountains to Genting Highlands.

2016 sees the start of their operations on the waterfront of Kuala Terengganu (March- September avoiding the monsoon season). Cempaka Helicopter Corporation has one Robinson R44 stationed full time in Langkawi flying tourists on joy flights around all 99 islands.

If you're wondering if tours to golf resorts such as the one in Cameron Highlands, or to islands such as Redang Island is possible, the answer is "Yes!". They are more than happy to arrange resort transfers, drop offs to exotic locations where local kampung food is served and more.

They will even help arrange a limo to pick you up from your hotel in KL city to Taman Titiwangsa to make it super convenient for you.

[Here's a little trivia: Did you know that the engine of a helicopter has a limit of 3000 starts before it is mandatory to be changed? Safety procedures are very stringent - even more stringent than those for cars!]

I was one of the lucky few to be invited to take a ride at the KL Sky Tour soft launch two days ago. I imagined myself taking plenty of selfies and glamour shots next to the helicopters but the glaring sun wasn't on my side (plus there were about 100 people who were also grabbing their chance to have their photos taken).

After waiting about an hour in line in the scorching sun, it was my turn! I was really excited! I was instructed to put on my seatbelt and headset once on the helicopter. While I was busy fiddling with the camera to capture my first experience riding a helicopter, we were already high up in the sky in a matter of seconds! My stomach didn't feel queasy AT ALL! Waaaaay better than an airplane take off.

Credit must be given to our pilot and Cempaka Helicopter Corporation executive director, Datuk James Ashley Greaves, of course.
