Movie review: Big Eyes #film #movie #art

I love art and when I read the synopsis of Big Eyes while channel surfing on a Saturday night, I thought it might be an interesting watch.

Big Eyes is a drama directed by Tim Burton is about the awakening of the painter Margaret Keane, her phenomenal success in the 1950s, and the subsequent legal difficulties she had with her husband, who claimed credit for her works in the 1960s.

It stars Amy Adams as Margaret Keane whose trademark paintings always has a portrait of a girl with big eyes. When she met her soon to be husband who claims to have studied in Paris while painting in a park beside her, he asked her why she always painted big eyes (Like they're really out of proportion). She replied that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Everything she feels is expressed in the eyes. They soon fall in love with his endless support.

Her art was not popular then and art critics didn't understand it but her husband Keane, finds ways of displaying them in restaurants and galleries along with his own artwork. When people start noticing her art instead of his (she signs her paintings with a "Keane") he claims credit for her work.

Margaret, of course, finds out one day when she attends a showcase her husband asked her not to attend and overhears him claiming the works as his. He convinces her that he is a better sales person and indeed, interest starts soaring and sales of posters and printed merchandise make them very wealthy.

The secret of not revealing that she is the true artists continued to haunt her (she even had to lie to her own daughter from a previous marriage). She started painting in a different style and showcasing her work in galleries, too.

Soon, she finds out her husband isn't the artist she thinks he is. One night he goes into a terrible rage and causes a fire in her home but she and her daughter managed to escape. They created a new life in Hawaii where she reveals the truth about her artwork.

Amy Adams won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical in 2015 for this movie.
